Are Your Large Breasts Causing You Back Pain?

Women with large breasts often have to deal with unwanted and embarrassing attention. But what most people don’t realize is that the effects of large breasts can be painful in many different ways.

Reasons to Have Breast Reduction Surgery

Women who may want to consider a breast reduction may do so because of the many physical and emotional reasons, including:

  • Chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain
  • Chest wall pain
  • Headaches
  • Poor posture
  • Numbness and tingling of the hands
  • Shortness of breath
  • Low tolerance for exercise
  • Constant irritation of the skin between and beneath the breasts
  • Nerve pain
  • Issues with low self-esteem
  • Difficulty finding clothes that fit

The benefits of breast reduction surgery include an improved lung function, an improved quality of sleep, reduction of pain, an improved skeletal stability, a reduction in headaches, and a better visualization of the breast on a mammogram.

Candidates for Breast Reduction Surgery

While we would like to consider all patients as suitable candidates for breast reduction surgery, there are reasons why some patients should not undergo this surgical procedure, which include:

  • Patients who are morbidly obese
  • Patients who are smokers
  • Patients with an underlying medical history of heart disease or diabetes
  • Patients who want to avoid scarring

After a breast reduction procedure, patients usually experience soreness, swelling, and bruising for several days. Your bandages are removed after a few days and replaced with a surgical bra for support. You will need to limit your physical activity for a period of time. Your stitches will be removed 2 to 3 weeks after your procedure and you can return to your regular activities. As your swelling is reduced you will notice that the appearance of your breasts improves. Scars will eventually fade and will not be seen when you are wearing a bathing suit or a low-cut top.
